Consists of meeting minutes (1949-1965) and correspondence of the Michigan Park Citizens Association. It also contains a scrapbook of photographs, letters, and other memorabilia about the Michigan Park Garden Club (1951-1973).

Abstract

This is an interview with the Brookland Manor Resident Council President, Minnie Elliott. Ms. Elliott currently resides in Brookland Manor and describes her efforts to bring resources and services to the residents of Brookland Manor. These efforts subsequently led her to collaborate with the Edgewood/Brookland Family Support Collaborative (E/BFSC). Ms. Elliott explains the impact that E/BFSC had and continues to have on the residents in Brookland Manor.

Scope and Contents The collection contains photocopies of meeting minutes, minute indexes, the constitution, and by-laws for the Mount Pleasant Citizens Association. Minute indexes are keyed to the page numbers in the physical books of minutes, which cover multiple years. Some years were split between multiple books. There are indexes for the years 1921-1927, 1927-1932, 1933-1938, 1938-1948, and 1948-1957. The indexes provide the key to topics of the meeting’s discussions and actions. Some topics of note...

Patricia Quander Hall shares hear earliest memories growing up in Lynchburg, Virginia and goes on to discusses how she and her husband, Burt Hall, Sr., ended up becoming a part of a wave of new, Black professionals who first integrated the Penn Branch neighborhood in southeast Washington, D.C. She shares what it was like to live in the community as a young person of color in the 1960s and she shares her opinions on life today as a senior living in Penn Branch.

Abstract This oral history project documented the personal narratives of the first generation of African Americans who integrated Penn Branch, a neighborhood of approximately 550 single-family homes in southeast Washington, D.C.
