Alice Stewart Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection is comprised of the personal and professional papers of Alice Stewart, and is grouped into 8 series. Series 1 contains material produced by the Palisades Citizens' Association, with a significant portion detailing the group's opposition to various development proposals. Series 2 and 3 contain materials regarding neighborhood history, notable residents and historic sites. Series 4 and 5 highlight specific streets; data for the latter was gathered for a 1995 survey conducted by Catholic University. Series 7 and 8 contain material Stewart’s research notes, files, and photographs for The Palisades of Washington, D.C., an updated and expanded guide to a neighborhood history originally compiled by fellow Palisades resident and former Citizens’ Association president Harold Gray.

Biographical / Historical
DC native Alice Stewart (1942) has been active in Palisades community affairs since moving there in the 1990s. Previously a teacher of history and geography, Stewart leads tours of the area. She is the author of The Palisades of Washington, D.C., published in 1995 as part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series.
