Abstract

Ms. Adwoa Beidleman-Aggrey reflects on her life, training, and involvement as a member and President of the Washington Section, National Council of Negro Women. She shares candid conversations and her insights concerning issues affecting some of the needs faced by women and their families.

Scope and Contents The collection contains approximately 270 black and white prints and 83 slides, the majority of which depict the African-American community of the Southwest neighborhood of Washington, D.C., primarily from the 1920s through the 1970s. Contains correspondence, clippings, meeting minutes, reports, and pamphlets of local issues and citizens’ organizations in which Mrs. Ellis was involved; including the Chillum Heights Citizens’ Association, the D.C. Federation of Citizens’ Associations, Junior Village, the Committee for the Rights of the D.C. Business Community, urban renewal, home rule, and mass transit. Of significance, is a 1972 report titled "Report of the Special Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Urban Renewal in D.C."

Content Description

Collection consists of one (1) photograph album containing 108 images. Some images have brief inscriptions as to their content, but many of the locations and people in the photos are unidentified. Subjects of the photographs include unidentified family members and friends of the creator, a trip to Colonial Beach, and boating on the Potomac River. There are several images of members of the DC National Guard and several of Cornell University.

Between 1983 and 1985, Dolores Smith conducted 33 oral history interviews as a part of her film project Southwest Remembered: A Story of Urban Renewal. Interviewees were residents, business owners, and others with longstanding connections to the Southwest neighborhood. Topics include the Southwest neighborhood before urban renewal, the effects of urban renewal on the neighborhood and community, childhood and life experiences, and work and social life.

Scope and Content Note

Collection consists of 56 DVDs containing interviews with 47 individuals discussing topics related to Southwest DC. All interviews are conducted by Rev. Brian Hamilton of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 I Street, SW. One disc, entitled SW Streets, contains footage without audio of the construction of a variety of building projects in the Southwest neighborhood.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the research and writings about Theresa Trainor’s projects in the Southwest neighborhood completed as a part of her studies at American University. There are research papers, research files, interviews, transcripts, audio, and video cassettes. Materials document Southwest before urban renewal transformed the neighborhood. Many of the materials document the Willow Tree playground football team and its alumni.
