The collection contains clippings and alphabetically arranged office files maintained by the League of Women Voters of the District of Columbia to document its activities. Topics in the records cover primarily local D.C. political issues, but also national and international concerns of the National League of Women Voters. The records are divided into two series: topical files and clippings.

Abstract

This is an interview with the Brookland Manor Resident Council President, Minnie Elliott. Ms. Elliott currently resides in Brookland Manor and describes her efforts to bring resources and services to the residents of Brookland Manor. These efforts subsequently led her to collaborate with the Edgewood/Brookland Family Support Collaborative (E/BFSC). Ms. Elliott explains the impact that E/BFSC had and continues to have on the residents in Brookland Manor.

Scope and Contents The collection consists of 86 packages of strip negatives. Some packages contained multiple negatives bringing the total number of strip negatives to 97. The strip negatives contain between one and seven images, with 372 total images in the collection. All images were taken by Mary Mitchell and are of locations throughout D.C. including the U.S. Capitol building, Chinatown, Dupont Circle, National Mall, and Lafayette Square. This collection consists mainly of clippings and programs relating to Howard University in the 1920s and 1930s. Also included are postcards of the Biltmore Hotel and a black establishment in Durham, North Carolina. Other materials of Ms. Price are at Howard University.

The collection consists of 1,416 photographs of Redevelopment Land Agency (RLA) construction projects throughout Washington, D.C. Of note are the projects related to the Southwest Waterfront and the repaving operations throughout the city.

Digital audio recordings and PDF transcripts of 10 oral history interviews recorded by Shaw Library staff to document the Shaw neighborhood and the effect of the 1968 riots on its community.

Between 1983 and 1985, Dolores Smith conducted 33 oral history interviews as a part of her film project Southwest Remembered: A Story of Urban Renewal. Interviewees were residents, business owners, and others with longstanding connections to the Southwest neighborhood. Topics include the Southwest neighborhood before urban renewal, the effects of urban renewal on the neighborhood and community, childhood and life experiences, and work and social life.
