Dr. Messiah K. King and his wife Bertha King were members of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.. The Metropolitan Baptist Church was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1864 in a Quaker Civil War barracks.

The collection was originally a part of the Library Washington Vertical File Collection. The materials were removed due to their unique nature among the “Church Series” of the Vertical File Collection. It is not known as to how the Library acquired the materials.
