Scope and Contents
D.C. Oral History Collaborative (DCOHC) is a citywide initiative to train community members in oral history skills, fund new and ongoing oral history projects, connect volunteers with oral history projects, and publicize existing oral history collections. DCOHC is a project of DC Public Library, HumanitiesDC, and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. This collection contains oral history interviews, transcripts, and indexes produced by DCOHC grantees.

Biographical / Historical
Delabian Rice Thurston, also a school parent, was executive director of Parents United from 1984 to 2000. Through the parent resources she developed as well as personal outreach and recruiting, she was able to involve parents from every DC public school in the advocacy of Parents United.

Abstract
Delabian Rice Thurston mentions the several communities where her Air Force father was posted and where she attended public school. She describes her education at Grinnell College and George Washington University, and she talks about her work as a city planner. Rice Thurston describes her organizing activities at Parents United: presentations at parent meetings, newsletters, reading lists, and a parent recognition program. She reflects on the struggle for adequate school funding and other issues addressed by Parents United.
