Biographical / Historical

Francine Berkowitz was born in New York City in 1942 to first- and second- generation Polish immigrants. Her family moved to Oneida Street NE soon after she was born, and she attended Keene Elementary, Paul Junior High, and Coolidge High School. The family moved to the Maryland suburbs in her senior year. She worked at the Smithsonian for almost 60 years.
