The Mount Pleasant Riot Oral History Collection contains 10 audio interviews of people who were members of the Mount Pleasant, D.C. community during the riot of 1991. The interviews were conducted by Pat Scallen in late 2017 and early 2018. Transcripts are included for all interviews.

Digital audio recordings and PDF transcripts of 10 oral history interviews recorded by Shaw Library staff to document the Shaw neighborhood and the effect of the 1968 riots on its community.

Scope and Contents

Suann Hecht discusses moving from New York City to a group house in Mount Pleasant in 1972, her memories of the neighborhood, her involvement with the Latin America Youth Center, the city's handling of the Mount Pleasant riot, the demographics of the neighborhood, and the aftermath of the riot.

Abstract

This oral history interview was a follow-up to a previous interview on June 6, 2019 conducted with Tobin Smith by Stephanie Mills Trice. Tobin Smith recalls Fort Totten being a peaceful community that no one heard of until the subway came. He discusses time with friends playing, partying, riding his bike downtown D.C., attending UDC, and having a career in the television industry.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 35mm slides artificially assembled from various locations throughout the division’s collection based solely on format. The images cover a wide array of subjects. Abstract In this oral history interview, Mr. Wes Morrison discusses his life and experiences moving from Durham, North Carolina, to Washington, D.C., in 1959. The interview begins with a discussion of Mr. Morrison’s early life in Durham. Mr. Morrison talks about his grandmother and aunt, who raised him, and the Brookstown community in which they lived.
