Folder contains one 7 14/16" x 10 3/4" one-sided manuscript letter and one same-sized cover sheet (envelope). Letter is from Benjamin Stoddert (1752-1813) and was written in Trenton, NJ on October 8, 1798. Stoddert was the first United States Secretary of the Navy from May 1, 1798 to 31 March 31, 1801. The letter is addressed to Colonel Francis Deakins (1739 - 1804) in "Geo Town Patomak" (Georgetown, Washington, DC). Stoddert mentions "Fox" (perhaps British naval architect Josiah Fox (1763 - 1847) and "Biddle" (perhaps Pennsylvania statesman Charles Biddle (1745 – 1821).
