Biographical / Historical

Frank E. Braxton, Sr. was born in Washington, D.C. in 1915 and lived in the city until his death in 2015 at 100 years of age. Braxton worked for 35 years for the United States Postal Service, then became active in local Democratic politics and history. He was also a dedicated supporter and active participant in St. Martin’s Catholic Church and D.C. Crime Stoppers, serving on the Board of the latter. Braxton worked diligently to keep D.C. neighborhoods safe, especially for the city’s youth. Also an avid traveler, Braxton documented his journeys throughout his lifetime with numerous photos, including friends and his extensive family.

Custodial History

There is no deed of gift for this collection and it is uncertain how or when the Library acquired the collection.

Processing Information

Standard archival procedures were adhered to in accordance with the Library’s processing manual. The oversized scrapbooks were rehoused in appropriate boxes. Duplicate campaign buttons and license plates were deaccessioned. The papers and photographs were shifted, sorted, and reorganized into 14 boxes of various sizes. The photographs were not sleeved. Duplicate documents were weeded from the collection and discarded. In addition, the processor removed all clips and deteriorating fasteners, photocopied decaying clippings, and made redacted copies of any materials containing sensitive or personal information.
