Biographical / Historical

Mamie Himmelwright McIlwee was born on August 8, 1886 in Star Tannery, Frederick County, Virginia to parents John and Hattie Himelright. Mamie married Branson Gilbert McIlwee and together they raised four children in the District, Mae, Hettie, Jay, and John. Mrs. McIlwee worked to secure funding for expanded classrooms, additional courses, educational materials, and grounds beautification at Roosevelt High School by serving on the Roosevelt Parent Teacher Association as a member of the Legislative Committee and Chairman of the Committee on Beautifying School and Library Grounds. Additionally Mrs. McIlwee was a member of the Petworth and Manor Park Citizens Associations. Mrs. McIlwee passed August 3, 1967 at the National Lutheran Home for the Aged in Northeast D.C.

Processing Information

One scrapbook was disassembled due to degradation. Its contents were sorted into various folders for correspondence, legal documents and newspaper clippings. Correspondence was extracted from the remaining scrapbook which has been kept intact with original newspaper clippings left inside. In keeping with the original organization of the scrapbooks, documents were grouped by theme or subject and then arranged in chronological order.
