Biographical / Historical

The Washington Navy Yard was established in 1799 and is one of the United States Navy’s oldest shore establishments. The Yard was the Navy’s largest shipbuilding facility until the British burned it during the War of 1812. After the war the Yard never regained its prominence as a shipbuilding facility due to the shallow waters of the Anacostia River. In 1866 the Yard was designated as an ordnance manufacturing center and by the start of World War II it was the largest ordnance facility in the world. At its peak the Yard consisted of 188 buildings on 126 acres and employed over 25,000 people. In 1964 the Yard was redesignated. Today the Yard houses a variety of activities, serving as the headquarters of the Naval District Washington, Naval Historical Center and Museum, and the home of numerous support activities for the fleet and aviation communities.
