Biographical / Historical
In 1907, Bishop Henry Satterlee wrote that he hoped the central tower of the then-proposed Washington National Cathedral would be named the Gloria in Excelsis Tower. George A. Fuller Company began construction on the Cathedral in 1910, though the central tower was not completed until the early 1960s. Decorative details such as the carved angels and shields were finally put into place by February 1964. On May 7, 1964, the Cathedral held a dedication ceremony for the tower, which included mass and a choir performance.
