Scope and Contents
D.C. Oral History Collaborative (DCOHC) is a citywide initiative to train community members in oral history skills, fund new and ongoing oral history projects, connect volunteers with oral history projects, and publicize existing oral history collections. DCOHC is a project of DC Public Library, HumanitiesDC, and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. This collection contains oral history interviews, transcripts, and indexes produced by DCOHC grantees.

Biographical / Historical
Alvin 'AC' Coles was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He is a product of the DC Public Schools system. Coles was a co-owner of The Eclipse for approximately 10 years. He became a partner after he was asked by the owners to join the management team in the founding of this hand dance venue.

Abstract
Alvin Coles' story highlights the ways in which dance venues supported hand dance for their patrons. He especially addresses how The Eclipse evolved from a travel groups' clubhouse to a club for hand dancers. As a hand dancer, and a former club owner, Coles speaks to how hand dance venues provided entertainment and opportunities for dancers to socialize.
