The series contains correspondence, mostly incoming letters, notes, and printed email, pertaining to Smith’s professional life. Although not the bulk of the materials, the series contains a good amount of personal correspondence from friends and family. Many letters include attached materials such as clippings, lists, draft documents, and other items. Correspondence has been arranged chronologically by year and month as needed. Undated or incomplete dated materials are filed at the end of each year, with completely undated materials at the end of the series. Additional correspondence may be found in other series. Letters of interest include: a 1958 trip log, a 1968 letter form Vice President Hubert Humphrey concerning the Neighborhood Development Youth Program, 1976 letters pertaining to his time as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, and a March 21, 1977 letter from a terminally ill Julius Hobson expressing his desire to have Tina Hobson complete his term on City Council.  Additionally there are a number of letters from Marion Barry including a November 1971 letter following his first election win and a March 24, 1977 note following his being shot during the Hanafi Muslim takeover of the City Council Building. A February 14, 1992 letter contains a copy of “Washington is My Home Town,” a song written by Smith in 1978.
