D.C. Oral History Collaborative (DCOHC) is a citywide initiative to train community members in oral history skills, fund new and ongoing oral history projects, connect volunteers with oral history projects, and publicize existing oral history collections. DCOHC is a project of DC Public Library, HumanitiesDC, and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. This collection contains oral history interviews, transcripts, and indexes produced by DCOHC grantees.

Biographical / Historical

Born in Mexico City, Gerardo Camargo became a self-taught young artist in the big city who, in a short time, earned recognition thanks to his first exhibit. Despite the city leaving a mark on his work, he settled down in Cuernavaca. There, he created his first art gallery with the support of his wife, also an artist. Currently, he lives and works in Kensington, Maryland.

Visual artist Violeta Bárcenas interviewed visual artist Gerardo Camargo about his upbringing and how that impacted his desire to become an artist, and his journey to coming to the U.S. and how he has connected with the local artistic community. The interview was done in Spanish.
